A Shout-Out
This is a shout-out to everyone who was able to celebrate my special day with me: T/Earl, pussyg, thisaintnodisco, cfarino anddreamofsheep, Dr. J, COP, C-Hi, MC Jason, J&J, Special K, the A-man, C-low, J-Dog, et. al. I love everybody, but I love you a little extra. I am reminded of my favorite Rumi poem, "The Time of Divulging," which ends (in the Coleman Barks translation): "Now the kissing is over. Fold your love in. Hide it like pastry filling. Whisper within with a shy girl's tenderness." And, finally, a selection from my new photographic series, "Magical Morning": P.S. Forward your pictures from the event to me so that I can add them to my scrapbook... |

Passover blessing
As you know, I am in the ninth month of my battle against high-fructose corn syrup. The struggle becomes easier this time every year when Coke produces a real-sugar version of their beverage for Passover. I found many stacks of the magic 2 liter bottles near the Kosher section of Kroger; look for the special yellow cap and sucrose listed as the key ingredient. |

United by dislike?
Negativity Friendships: it's one of the big ideas this year! "If you ask a random sample of friends how they became friends, they will probably tell you that they like a lot of the same things and, perhaps more important, that they like the same people. So they may. But one of the surest routes to friendship is disliking the same things about other people...'It’s not that we enjoy disliking people,' Bosson, a social psychologist at the University of South Florida, says. 'It’s that we enjoy meeting people who dislike the same people.'" http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/10/magazine/10Section2b.t-7.html?pagewanted=printWhom can you and I dislike together? |

Wonderment
Stuart and I enjoyed a fine evening at the cinema last night as we took in a special showing of the new blockbuster "New World" that is setting hearts afire worldwide. The crowd was friendly and passed along several bits of information about validating parking and about the site www.shakefire.com/screenings for getting free movie passes. As for the movie, never have meaningful glances been given such prominence! The audience paid quiet attention for the full 150 minutes, and many had strong opinions. Stuart said that he had learned to love again while I enjoyed learning about my ancestors. A good time was had by all. |

On the Rag
Like Jesus, I sometimes suffer for others' sins. Today was such a day when my eating buddy [let's call him "Jeff"] took me to the Ethiopian restaurant near Briarcliff and North Druid Hills. The restaurant was empty when we arrived (and empty when we left) -- a harbinger we should have noticed. We sat on the platform near the entrance. An exotic beauty took our order of meat and vegetable platters. They were out of tripe, so I'm not really sure what all we got. In order to eat the stuff, we used the sponge-like bread as a claw to gather it and bring it to our mouths. One of my chunks contained a bony cylinder; "Jeff" told me to suck out its bitter innards, so I did. Then "Jeff" found something in his mouth that shouldn't have been there: a white cleaning cloth soaked in meat sauce! Opting to spit, he put the red-stained towelette on the table. Our waitress was not sure how it ended up in our meal and, I think, asked the chef not to include it in future meals. In the end, all ended well as the meat platter was comped and "Jeff" did not get sick -- plus the Post Office worker in Executive Park enjoyed our story. Such events are not likely to be repeated, so I highly recommend this restaurant. But remember: always temper your exploration of new things with a regard for safety. |

Oh Canada
Chris, Stuart, and I achieved unity tonight, so we will refer to ourselves as the collective CSR from now on. CSR ate a delicious egg nog bundht cake and decided that our summer trip will be a cross-country tour of Canada! We start in the frosty bowels of Montreal and climb our way to the peaks of Vancouver. Plus we'll take a detour south to Seattle to visit JR & Tim!! This will surely be the trip our collective lifetime!!! |

The Line between Fear and Love
Although a co-pay was required, last night's dinner with Stuart and Chris was truly a delight. ChriStuart shared stories of their adventures in San Francisco (the Chili's story is a hoot!) and gifted me with the largest macaroon I've ever seen; I don't know who was delighted more by it, they or I! The evening came with two climaxes. The first was the pork of Malory, highlighted by the finest sauce Chris has ever produced. Be sure to ask for this recipe! The second was the viewing of the director's cut of Donnie Darko. As we huddled together and watched, each of us remarked on its parallels with our own lives. By the movie's end, we were left drained on the sofa. Completely spent, we engaged in brief conversation before Stuart and I made our exit. The night air was bitterly cold yet strikingly refreshing. |
